THE GREATER CORKTOWN AREA: VOTED ONE OF THE BEST NEIGHBORHOODS IN DETROIT BY NICHE 2021

Greater Corktown, which encompasses North Corktown, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Detroit, flourishing in the 1840s when it was a popular destination for those coming to the area to work and prosper. And now it thrives, representing the best of the old, and the new, with charming, low–rise brick commercial buildings containing an exciting and evolving assortment of independent shops, bars, and restaurants. The residential streets offer a glimpse into the past with updated Victorian homes and converted warehouse lofts. It’s a great place to walk and bike, because of the parks, bike lanes, and dozens of destinations all within a few short blocks. In the years to come, it promises to become more of a center of innovation and enterprise, as well as entertainment and the arts, with the renovation and completion of the Michigan Central Train Station currently underway.

Through the Greater Corktown Framework plan

The City of Detroit finalized the Greater Corktown Framework in November of 2020. The plan includes various urban initiatives that will enhance North Corktown and surrounding neighborhoods, making them even more walkable and bike-friendly. Targeted initiatives include:

Improving streets to allow for safer roads and improved traffic flow such as changing Rosa Parks to a two-way street
Expanding & Improving pedestrian and cyclist paths, including pedestrian bridges and enhanced bicycle lanes
Designing streetscapes, connectivity, and Eco Corridors
Expanding & Improving Parks and Community Centers
Incentivizing and Facilitating Housing Development

The plan, along with public/ private funding, will spark neighborhood development following a modern, well-thought-out, community-endorsed blueprint for now and future generations. Greater Corktown is primed “to be the neighborhood of the future”.
